Dont Name, Blame and Shame … Its Not Helpful - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career We all have the tendency to blame. Its human nature. However, its also not productive. Name, Blame and Shame You may have heard of this before and you may even be guilty of doing it. I know I am. Im not proud of it either. I hope my experiences and suggestions below  can help you. Perhaps the next time you feel the urge to Name, Blame and Shame youll be able to use these ideas to re-direct your energies into something more productive. But, I want to VENT! This is not an uncommon emotional response. Emotions are good. They are part of being human. And, by no means am I suggesting that  the emotions be removed from your business and personal relationships. It’s part of what makes us human. However, there may be a better way. What Else Can You Do? Here are a few ideas Seek first to understand  â€" This is the 5th habit of Dr. Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and can be quite helpful. The second part of the 5th habit is “then to be understood” which is where most people start. They want to get their points across and sometimes not be willing to hear or even consider the other side. Think SBO  â€" Where SBO means Step Back Optimism. It’s something I came up with years ago. The idea and the intent is that when things seem to be at their darkest moment or seems to be going completely sideways … take a step back and view the situation in an optimistic light. It’s not always easy, but I have found it to be quite enlightening when I take on a bigger picture view. Take a deep breath  â€" This is an oldie and still a goodie. As your mother, teacher, manager or significant other may have told you.  Taking a deep and cleansing breath can truly help you flush away some of the bad air surrounding you and inside of you. These arent just platitudes It should come as no surprise that everybodys situation is different. By taking a few moments and realizing that your situation, your experiences, your worldview is in fact different than others. Whether you just take a breath, take a literal or figurative step back and/or seek to understand you will be able to look at the situation differently and be able to have a perspective you may not have had just one breath ago. Define, Destroy or Strengthen When something happens we have three choices. We can let it Define, Destroy or Strengthen us. You get to decide. YOU GET TO DECIDE! Next time … Instead of letting someone get under your skin and cause you to lash out with Naming, Blaming and Shaming … first take a moment to Seek Understanding, Step Back or Take a Deep Breath. Perhaps all three. You’ll likely feel better and you’ll be able to look at the situation in a new light. Try it. What have you got to lose? To my mind… the only think you’ve got to lose is the desire the name, blame and shame. While taking the situation on in a productive manner … warts and all. Unfortunately, there are countless productivity killers in the workplace that can affect employees’ abilities to do their jobs. According to a recent CareerBuilder survey of more than 2,000 hiring and HR managers, the most common culprits of low productivity in the workplace are cell phones and the Internet, followed closely by gossip, social media, and email. It comes as little surprise that technology is at the core of four of the five top productivity killers. But what employers don’t recognize is that Americans really do want to be productive at work and in their personal lives. Ironically enough, they say they need technology to do so. A new survey from Crucial.com on Americans’ opinions about productivity shows that more than 80 percent of them actually want to be more efficient and think technology can help them get there. Technology fuels productivity In today’s digital world, technology always runs the risk of being a distraction. While 87 percent of Americans claim technology plays an important role in their productivity, 63 percent admit their efficiency is most impacted when technology lets them down. One easy way for individuals to overcome a technology-driven slump is to learn simple ways to improve under-performing tech devices themselves. That said, only 37 percent of those surveyed feel confident fixing their computers should a problem arise. And three-quarters of Americans don’t know what computer memory is, which is the component within our computers that allows us to run multiple applications at once, multi-task and generally be more productive. Gender, generations, clocks and seasons The survey also sheds light on several other opinions related to Americans’ productivity: Men vs. women: About 67 percent of men believe they are more efficient than women, while 90 percent of women believe they are more efficient than men. As for what makes people more productive? Four in 10 men said having a fast computer makes them more productive, whereas six in 10 women said getting more sleep boosts their productivity levels. However, nearly all men and women (97 percent) agree sleep and exercise play pivotal roles in increasing productivity. Generational divide: Every generation thought baby boomers were most efficient except for millennials, who thought of themselves as being most efficient. About 78 percent of millennials said technology is an important factor when it comes to how productive they are. Productivity precision: About 62 percent of Americans feel most productive during the morning between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. When it comes to pinpointing an exact time for optimal efficiency, men and women agree they are most productive at 10:00 a.m. What’s more, nine in 10 respondents agree fall is their most productive season, while summer and winter are the most unproductive times of the year. Almost all Americans want to be more productive, but everyone has a different idea of how to achieve optimal productivity. Certainly sleep, exercise and time of day play important roles. But technology seems to own the market when it comes to helping (and hurting) Americans’ productivity both at work and at home. As Americans begin to recognize what is inhibiting and encouraging their productivity in their professional and personal lives, they can pinpoint ways to reach their collective goal of being more efficient.

Structure your time to land a job sooner - Have you been thinking about how you are using your time? My friend Jessica recently wrote about the topic of how she spends her job seeking time. She breaks it down pretty well and notes that it keeps her pretty busy, eight hours a day! When is the last time you really sat down to review how you were spending your hours? I think about this all the time as a business owner. What is the best use of my time? How can I help the most people? What are the best ways to approach new clients? What are efficient uses of my hours? How can I automate or outsource administrative tasks? What can I do to achieve my personal and business goals more quickly? Are there things that I need to say no to in order to stay on track and/or maintain my sanity? I think many people struggle with these issues, but they are magnified for job seekers, who often allow themselves to be adrift in a sea of job hunting that doesnt have much structure. I have a client who lets me know that she is doing a lot of networking and applying for jobs, but is really frustrated because she has not landed something yet. She believes that she is doing everything she can. However, when I ask about what she is doing (specifically) or re-suggest a particular site or something to consider, she typically has NOT followed up on that suggestion. So, some advice! Id suggest you make a list of all the things you are doing people you are informational interviewing, companies you have researched, jobs you have applied for and other job seeking activities you have been doing so you can best evaluate the course of your job search. I know you feel that you have been doing a lot, but if you outline things, it may help identify deficiencies if there are any. Take a good, long look at your list. What can you do MORE of? What can you do better? Maybe it feels like you are really busy and you have a sense you are doing a lot, but in reality, you cant break it down in writing. Make yourself accountable.
